Hot on the heels of our last post about Belgium is this story about our next stop in The Netherlands. Although only there for a few days, and really originally meant to break up our transition from France to our first main walking destination in Germany, The Netherlands turned out to be a little gem for us.

We took in a brief visit to a place that Chris had been for work trips before, where he found it much better in summer than his previous cold winter stays, Amsterdam, one of the world's great cities, and the truly beautiful town of Haarlem. The trip finished at another beachside resort, this time coinciding with an event with a high profile.

We hope you enjoy travelling this part of our journey with us.

  • The flats of Holland are in such stark contrast to the photos from the Pyrenees. I particularly love the pictures of the tulips, the canals and cheese. And it’s fascinating to see the bike parking arrangement! Was Lycra being donned by the cycling masses?

    • Very little Lycra to be seen. That seems to be reserved for the road-biking types with their superfast carbon fibre machines. Most on the streets of Amsterdam were sedate step-through commuters, with casual clothing to match.

One thing that was almost completely absent was any sign of helmets. Virtually none to be seen, including on us when we did the ride.
