Our journey continued from Puglia, taking another overnight ferry across the Adriatic to the Croatian port city of Split. Most of the old city of Split is enclosed behind the walls of the palace of the Roman Emperor, Diocletian. Our apartment was inside the walls, so we spent a few days living in the remains of his palace.

We really liked Split, one of our favourite places so far. Certainly a place we would recommend anyone come to visit, even if it's just to see where some of Game of Thrones was filmed.

We hope you enjoy it too!

  • Hi Chris. Split and Dubrovnik are sometimes seen as a destination pair, i.e. head to the Croatian coast and go to both locations. When I look at your map it doesn’t seem Dubrovnik is a place you are going. Have you been to this part of the world before and you’ve seen Dubrovnik already, or are there just too many places to see to make this additional destination possible? By the way, the Saints are 4 and 0… but I’m sure this is something you are well aware of!

    • That’s right, Mark. We have both been there before, but the decision not to go this time was more about the ferry routes from Italy. The only trans-Adriatic routes go to Durres in Albania, Bar in Montenegro, or Split in Croatia. The decision to spend 10 days in Lecce was a late change of plans, and we had dropped the transit through Albania, Montenegro, and Bosnia-Herzegovina to accommodate. In the end, starting the Croatian leg in Split seemed to be the best option.

Being a Saints fan is an exercise in continuous disappointment, and we have a couple of bigger tests in the next few weeks. But being 4-0 is a totally unexpected surprise that I’m going to enjoy for another week at least! 🙂
