We were on a mission to get into central Romania for a special booking we had made for New Year, but wanted to break the journey a bit. We had read that the small city of Veliko Tarnovo was a pretty place, and worth including in any Bulgarian tourist's itinerary.
And so it proved to be! Although we only had one night there, we managed to fit in the sights of another mediaeval city, and some good food as well. We hope you like the short story of our stopover there.

It’s a bit of both. We were really just looking for a stopover, and one of the websites we looked at said this was one of the prettiest towns in Bulgaria, so that sealed it. There is a big fortress there that we didn’t have time to visit, but I think that is a big attraction. With more time and a car, there are some good hiking areas nearby ads well, and I think that draws a lot of visitors in the warmer months.
What a beautiful little town. Was tourism its focus or was it just a out the way place for the locals?
