Our adventure continues along the North Coast 500 route, northwards and westwards from Mellon Charles. This part of the journey brings more of the spectacular coastal scenery around the northwest corner of Scotland, and then leaving the mountains for the low, windswept hills and headlands of the northeast.

There are castles, and walks to windy headlands, historic fishing ports, and even a game of golf on a spectacular course overlooking the North Atlantic Ocean. Come with us as we explore another part of wild Scotland.

  • Thanks for another wonderful Sway. The photos were breathtaking and the stories fascinating. I hope Kate and I get to visit the northern reaches of Scotland one European summer in the not too distant future! I can only wonder what life would be like for the person you chatted to in Wick whose lifetime had been spent in the region. I’m guessing the speed of daily life and pace of change is significantly gentler in this part of the world than it is in the large cities where most of us reside.

Rural towns in some parts of Australia, like the Western Australia Wheatbelt, have been slowly fading away for many years.

But Wick didn’t have the same feeling of inevitable decline. Maybe it’s because, although small compared to places to the south, it is one of only three sizable towns north of Inverness, along with Ullapool and Thurso. The fellow we spoke to seemed happy to have sent his life there.
