The final stop on our northward journey through Croatia was Opatija, the gateway to Croatia's Istrian Peninsula. As well as being a resort city on Croatia's answer to the French Riviera, it is also home to some of Jan's relatives. She last saw them in the early 1980s, so it was a nice reunion all these years later.
Of course, we also managed to fit a nice walk in. We hope you enjoy the tale of our stopover there.

I just looked up Opatija on google maps. What an amazing part of the world. Right on the coast, 70km’s to Trieste, just over 200km’s to Venice, 20 km’s to Slovenia, 200km’s to Bosnia & Herzegovina, 200km’s to Austria, and so it goes on. Coming from Perth where it is 2,000km’s to anywhere other than the coast, this looks like a cultural paradise. Am just wondering what language you conversed with Jan’s family in?
Yes, it’s a fascinating area. Changes in borders over many years have seen it be shifted to different rulers depending on the ebbs and flows of politics and wars. There were three cousins, two wives and a husband at the dinner. All spoke good English, except one of the wives. But she seemed happy enough with translations into Croatian. Italian is spoken widely here too.
