After leaving the Highlands after our Ben Nevis climb, we had broken our journey through Perthshire to Aberdeen with a stopover in Blairgowrie. Aberdeen was always on our visit plan, and we were lucky enough to arrange to house sit there. It would be our first time looking after a tortoise.

Tort the tortoise was good fun, and we were able to use Aberdeen to do some exploring along the east coast, and inland to do some walking in the Cairngorms National Park. Aberdeen itself was a nice place to explore as well, and we saw its endless grey granite buildings in their sparkling glory when the sun came out.

We hope you enjoy exploring this part of Scotland with us.

  • Hi Chris and Jan. You’ve spent time with friends in Glasgow, you’re meeting people in Aberdeen, no doubt you’re chatting to people across the all parts of Scotland. I’m wondering, do you find the accents of the locals the same country-wide or are there notable differences in speech and character? The south-east of England is different to the west county, which is different again the English north. Does the same apply to Scottish folk?

    • Yes, we have noticed differences. The Glaswegian accent is very strong and quire harsh-sounding. It seems to be the stereotypical voice seen in the movies. But as we moved further north the accent became less and more lyrical. In some places, we could almost understand what was being said!

  • Hi Chris and Jan it’s great to follow your trek around the world. You are obviously thoroughly enjoying your time away – almost a year. You will have many tales to tell around a barbecue and a red wine. I hope your continued cultural journey remains exciting and safe. Take care Len and Wendy

    • Good to hear from you Len. Our journey has been fabulous, and we are now into the last stages. A couple more weeks in Scotland, then a lap around Ireland before coming back late July.

We hope you can hear the tales first hand. Wendy and you should think about coming to stay with us in Cairns sometime. Plenty of room!
