We spent the final week of our time in Scotland back in the south, at one of our Karma resorts. The Lake of Menteith is about an hour's drive from Glasgow, near the Trossachs National Park. It is close to some of the larger cities in the south of Scotland, like Stirling and Edinburgh, so it was a good base for day trips.

The weather wasn't the best while we were there, but we still managed to see quite a lot. We saw our friend Colin again as well. We hope you enjoy reading about our time there.

  • With more travels to come in the years ahead (of this I have no doubt), are you likely to spend more time focusing on the busy cultural cities (e.g. Edinburgh) or the smaller hamlets such as Wick? They must be such vastly different experiences I’m wondering if you’ve developing a stronger taste for one or the other?

Orkney was the same, and some spots in Europe like Thessaloniki and towns in the Peloppenese. Places like Edinburgh attract hordes of tourists for good reasons, and travellers would be silly not to go to the big attractions. But being an attraction means most of the experiences are had in the midst of other tourists, and the offerings are through the lens of tourist businesses.

The balance we struck was to spend a day doing the tourist things in places like Edinburgh but spending a few more days in places like the northern highlands. The experience there isn’t so much flavoured by the need to cater to the whims of transients.
