With the pandemic curtailing travel, and for those of us living through 2020 in Melbourne, some pretty long and severe lockdowns, the Walk the World website hasn't had the attention that we had planned for it. We've managed a couple of posts in the last year by creating stories of some trips we've taken over the last few years, but that's all about to change. Our adventures are about to start again!
Today's post highlights two stories from the first big trip we did together in 2010. This was an amazing three weeks in Indonesia where we got up close and personal with the orangutans of Kalimantan and did a very difficult walk to the top of an active volcano in Java. The third story is of a recent bike ride we did when the Melbourne lockdown ended. Click on the photos below to see the stories.
But the big news is that during the months of lockdown we have made some huge plans for the coming years. We're selling up everything and becoming nomads at the end of the month, beginning what could be three or four years of travel, both in Australia and internationally.
We are both at an age and stage of life where thoughts turn to deciding what retirement will look like. For us, it will be somewhere near the coast that is warmer than Melbourne.
Having too many hours on our hands to do nothing more than browse the internet looking at what looks nice along the east coast of Australia, we've realised that there is only so much you can learn from website. So we are hitting the road for a few months to see the places ourselves. The plan is to reach North Queensland in about July and stay there for several months. There are some fantastic-looking places up there that could be our long-term home, but neither of us has experienced a full-on wet season
in the tropics. We need to find out whether we can handle the heat, the humidity, the cyclones, the stingers and the crocodiles!
If we find that we do like all of that, and everything else the far north has to offer, then maybe we'll stay. But if not, we're sure to have found a few places during our journey to get there that will suit us. We still have some developing plans to do a lot more travelling in Europe and South East Asia. But for the next year or so, we'll be bringing you lots more stories about our adventures on the road in Australia.

I’ve visited the mountain gorillas in Rwanda and had an amazing experience. Now you have inspired me to go to Kalimantan so I can meet my fellow ‘Rangas’.
We definitely recommend this trip Kate, and we can connect you with Alyn if you need a good guide.
Hi Kate. I’ve installed a plugin that should notify you whenever someone replies to your comment. Let me know if you get a notification from Walk The World.
