Tourists come to the North-Eastern corner of Romania for one reason, to see the sublime UNESCO-listed Painted Monasteries of the Bucovina Region. Although it's a long way from the attraction in Transylvania, and less than 50 kilometres from the border with Ukraine, the effort to get here and back is repaid tenfold when these gorgeous structures are seen.
Enjoy seeing them with us in the latest post from our journey through Eastern Europe.

Incredible photos of an amazing place. Let’s hope the troubles in Ukraine don’t spill over into this part of the world.
The war did come up in a few conversations while we were travelling through Eastern Europe. People generally believe that being a NATO member nation is a huge deterrent to Russia that they will never cross the border. We heard more than one person say Russia would never attack a NATO country because it would trigger a full NATO response. There was less certainty about the security of Moldova next door. Non-NATO and with a big ethnic Russian population.
There is a region in Moldova called Transnistria which is a real throwback to 1950s Cold War communism. Before the war in Ukraine, the region always popped up as a quirky tourist destination, where you can go to see what the old Communist Era lifestyle was really like.
