Heading westwards from Invergordon, the next part of our journey took us back into the towering hills and deep valleys of The Highlands. This time, the scenery was even better because we hugged the magnificent coastline of the northwest of Scotland.

To say that the scenery in this part of Scotland is breathtaking would be a serious understatement. The narrow single-lane roads wind in and out of valleys and around bays and lochs, revealing ever more awesome scenery around every bend.

This story has more photos than words, in an attempt to show you what it is like, but photos really can't do it justice. We hope you like what you see though, and enjoy this part of our adventure too.

  • Hi Chris & Jan. Heavens you’ve seen a lot of Scotland. Do you feel like you’ve just scratched the surface of what’s on offer or is the month you’ve spent there enough to see everything to a satisfying level of depth?

    • We actually finished up spending 7 weeks in Scotland, and could easily come back to see more. The northwest highlands are truly spectacular and there are many more walks to do there. We only scratched the surface of the Cairngorms, and didn’t see much of the Trossachs further south. In a later post you’ll read about our visit to The Orkneys, which we loved, but we didn’t have time to go further north to The Shetlands.

Admittedly we had better weather than you would expect, and that made the travelling more enjoyable. Perhaps it wouldn’t have been as much fun if it had rained all the time. Most visitors to Scotland spend their time in the south, especially Edinburgh and the east coast up to Inverness. But for us, the real adventure was north of that. We would say that everyone should put the North Coast 500 road trip on their list of must-do travels, and see the real Highlands.
